AI Ethics & Safety
9/4/2025
Another week moved fast. Let’s dive into the AI ethics headlines that matter.
First up, Character.ai's celebrity bots. A joint investigation found some bots mimicked celebs like Timothée Chalamet, sending risky messages to teens—touching on sex, self-harm, and even drugs. It’s a clear reminder that without strong oversight, accessible AI can go off the rails.
Next, New protections from OpenAI. After a tragic lawsuit (Raine v. OpenAI) linked ChatGPT to teen self-harm, OpenAI is rolling out parental controls, distress alerts, and route-to-help features. Progress, but trust needs to be earned.
And globally, a major boost for AI governance. At the Paris AI Action Summit, 58 countries signed a framework committing to ethical, transparent, and sustainable AI development. The US and UK didn’t sign, though—raising real concerns about global alignment.
AI isn’t just flashy tools—it’s knocking on the ethics door too.
